3 Tips to Defeat Loneliness During the Holiday Season ~
Every year, thousands of people are faced with loneliness during the holiday season; many are reminded of who or what they have lost leading up to the holidays. While millions of individuals celebrate with family friends, there are so many people who are not as fortunate to have close people with whom they can spend time. Though Christmas is often considered “The gift-giving day”, I cannot help but sympathize with those who are not able to participate or are without the means of contributing and giving. I encourage everyone to be considerate of those who may be dealing with loneliness and sadness due to an existing void or circumstance. In my sympathy for those who are hurting, I have developed 3 tips that are useful to help combat loneliness and create positive connections during the holiday season.
- Volunteer to help someone | No matter what you are going through, you are not alone. There is always someone who may be doing worse than you. One way to defeat sadness is by creating a space for love. Spread love and do a good deed this holiday. In doing so, you will find that there are many things to be happy about.
- Write a self-appreciation letter | What are you grateful for? Sometimes, it’s easy to think about all the things that you may have lost or those who are no longer here, but what about thinking about all the things that you still have? What about those who are still here? Write a letter of appreciation to yourself and express your gratitude towards the things and people that you appreciate.
- Join a new social group on social media | The best way to combat loneliness is to build new friendships and connect with more people. Social Media platforms, such as Facebook, has made it easier to connect with like-minded individuals through the creation of support groups. No matter what you are dealing with, there are support groups out there where you can meet others who are able to help you.
