2022: DECEMBER TEACHABLE MOMENT

This Season is Hard for Me

“For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:11 New King James Version (NKJV).  When reflecting on this scripture, I think of the lyrics to and old Christmas song, which joyously proclaims “it’s the most wonderful time of the year.”  Nevertheless, despite the excitement and joy of the Christmas holiday season, many people, believers in Christ included experience depression, anxiety, or a feeling of loneliness. For these reasons, the Christmas season is difficult for many. If this is you, fight the urge to keep your feelings to yourself this holiday season. To the contrary, be honest with your family and friends regarding how you are feeling.  Economic anxiety, loneliness and episodic depression can be dealt with by not getting overwhelmed with the commercial aspect of the season and focusing more on celebrating Christ[1].

Remember, feelings of isolation and loneliness are often overwhelming but communication and reaching out are good ways to overcome.  At its core, Christmas is all about the celebration of God’s love for humanity. Nothing pleases God more than to experience his children loving and supporting each other. Be open to receiving friends, well wishers and take advantage of attending community gatherings that celebrate the season.  Remember, you are not in a competition with anyone. If you feel overwhelmed, talk to your pastor, or seek clinical intervention.  There is no shame with ensuring the stability of your mental health.  Keep remembering, people love you and want you to be ok. God is always with you and never forget that!

Dear ones, everyone experiences feelings of sadness or loneliness differently, and that because of this, there is no “one size fits all” cure. However, you can be vigilant by being aware of your thoughts and feelings and taking advantage of speaking to those who you know and love you. God’s promise to you this holiday season is, Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” (Isiah 4:10, NKJV).
