2016: DECEMBER

‘Tis the Season’

Recently, my son asked me:  “Mommy how is Santa going to get us gifts if we don’t have a chimney”? I didn’t answer him because I questioned as to whether I wanted to tell him that there really isn’t a Santa Claus (that brings toys down the chimney). This was a teachable moment; it was time for us to let him know the real meaning of Christmas.

As parents, we want to keep the innocence of our children and allow them to have all the “perks” of Christmas.  But as believers we have an obligation to teach our kids who Christmas is all about. So, for now, I will allow him to continue to ponder about how Santa will get the gifts into our home.

On Christmas day before we open gifts, we will open the bible first to the story of the birth of Jesus. He will hear and my husband and I will ensure he understands that we celebrate Christmas because it was the day Jesus was born. He will learn that we give gifts, because God gave us the greatest gift on this special day. We also have the perfect opportunity to engrain this strong belief in Jesus being the reason for the Christmas season into our little girl. Though they still may be too young to comprehend, as they gets older, they will know that Jesus Christ was born and that is why we truly celebrate Christmas.

So, the Christmas season is upon us! Trees are going up, wreaths are being hung, and holiday music is in heavy rotation. Everyone is out buying gifts for their loved ones and making their holiday plans. Remember with all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, our children must know the true meaning of this very special holiday.

Tis’ the season…the real reason…Jesus Christ was born!

Merry Christmas!!
